Is Samsung up to something fishy? Apparently a few black buses with the words WAKE UP in white and protestors shouting WAKE UP have shown up outside of an Apple store in Australia. It may surprise you to know that the iPhone has two microphones and when on a speakerphone or FaceTime call, you’re probably talking into the wrong one. The iPhone actually has two speakers and two microphones. One set is at the top of the device and one set is at the bottom. The bottom microphone is located to the left of the dock connector. The top microphone is located next to the headphones jack. When on a typical call the bottom microphone is active and the top microphone is used for noise cancellation. Often when users are in a speakerphone or FaceTime call, and the person on the other end of call can’t hear them, they will move closer to the phone and speak towards the microphone at the bottom of the device. Surprisingly, that’s the wrong microphone to be talking to. Rather than using the bottom mic, Apple switches off noise cancellation and uses the top microphone to maintain a maximum distance between the bottom speaker and the voice input at the top of the iPhone.

“My iPad 3rd generation has much worse range than my iPad 1. Two places I use it most My Driveway, and “down the hall at work” iPad 1 (iPhone 4s, and Macbook) all have solid connections. New iPad nothing. not a thing.” One user reports only receiving good reception within six feet of a router while another claims to have had issues with four different third-generation iPads. The good news is that the fix is likely software related, as many in the forums pointed to temporary fixes like rebooting the device or toggling Wi-Fi on and off. OS X Daily confirmed resetting Wi-Fi and network settings seems to fix the issue for some and provided instructions. In 2010, the first generation iPad had Wi-Fi connectivity issues for some users and Apple eventually issued a software update to fix the problem, which is detailed in this support document. According to Apple, only “a very small number of iPad users” experienced the issue and that seems to be the case with the new iPad as well. If the issue is software related and the fix above does not work for all users, Apple could likely address it in a future software update. source: 9to5mac
In October, the “DirecTV” app added the ability to stream video over home networks. Today, an update to the app adds the ability to stream shows and movies over 3G and Wi-Fi anywhere. The new feature is limited to video content, meaning live TV streaming still requires a Wi-Fi connection on your home network. Engadget points us to an early review of the new feature that is apparently called “DirecTV Everywhere” from The Solid Signal Blog (below). According to the video, it looks like available content for the feature is limited to DirecTV’s Audience Network, HBO, Cinemax, Encore, Sony Movie Channel, and Starz. The update also adds a “social module” that lets you check which friend’s on Twitter and Facebook are watching, as well as Miso check-ins and the ability to resume watching programs on the iPad where you left off. You need to be a DirecTV subscriber to get access to the content, and you will find a long list of requirements for various features on the iTunes page with version 1.5.0…
“The new iPad is a blockbuster with three million sold–the strongest iPad launch yet.” — Philip Schiller, Apple’s Senior VP of Worldwide Marketing. Consumers purchased three million devices priced at a minimum of $499 over the device’s opening weekend. That’s $1.5 billion insales on the lowest end. The iPad 2 sold one million units during it’s first weekend. I can’t imagine why Tim Cook didn’t announce these number during the company’s financial conference call earlier this morning. Perhaps Apple was trying to confirm the numbers or give traders something to latch onto tomorrow and drive the company’s stock further past the $600 mark. Once again news outlets get to recycle the same storyline Apple and pundits wrote last October. The storyline goes something like this: incremental upgrade, mild praise with very vocal opposition, followed by the utter decimation of previous sales records. Nothing tops a weekend off like breaking both previous generations’ sales records during launch by factors of 10 (original iPad) and 3 (iPad 2) on top of finishing above the $600 per share. Oh and they somehow have more momentum going into the rest of the week market wise. Not many companies can pull this crap off. Wake me up when Apple’s losing streak starts. Source:modmyi
That did not take long. Just hours after today’s launch of the new iPad, jailbreaker MuscleNerd posted (via iFans) screenshots of what he claimed is a jailbroken third-generation iPad. Do not get too excited, because MuscleNerd warned there is “still lots of work to do.” Therefore, the jailbreak is far from prime time. There is “No ETA,” but he provided screenshots of Cydia running for further proof that it is on the way. We will keep you updated as progress is made. Over on the Dev-Team Blog, a new post noted: “It’s impossible to predict how or when these things turn out,” but the team also highlighted the progress made so far with iOS 5.1, as well as the possibility of jailbreaking the new iPad. Go past the break for the full breakdown. We can confirm that the method used to jailbreak the iPad2 4 months ago (before corona) still works even in 5.1. That means we’ll at least be able to get our foot in the door to get the required kernel dumps on the iPad3. That’s an important step, but by no means is it the end of the story. Those of you following @i0n1c may have noticed he’s already tweeted pictures of his iPad2 jailbroken at 5.1. As far as we know, he’s using a method completely unrelated to the one mentioned above. That would be great news! We’ve also seen bits and pieces of an entirely different jailbreak method being investigated by someone close to the Cydia repo scene. Don’t update your new iPad3 past whatever iOS it comes shipped with By the way, it’s rare but entirely possible that some of you may find your iPad3 comes with an iOS version that’s not quite 5.1. If you do, be sure to let us know
Reviews of the new iPad are going live, after Apple lifted its embargo on the press this evening. Below are some quick summaries of the many reviews across the web. From the reviews, It seems that the new Retina Display and 4G compatbility will be the main selling points on the new iPad. The Verge: Wall Street Journal Tech Crunch If you’re at all interested in LTE in an Apple product, obviously, get a new iPad. If you read a lot on your iPad, get the new iPad. If you take a lot of photos and videos (yeah you, the joker in the front row of the concert with your iPad in the air), get the new iPad. If you play a lot of games on the iPad, get the new iPad. If you don’t yet have an iPad, get the new iPad. The Loop:
